A mattress pad sits between your mattress and fitted sheet. It serves two main purposes: protecting the mattress from wear, spills, and allergens, and optionally adding a layer of comfort on top. Getting the right one depends on what problem you're actually trying to solve.
Understand GSM Before You Buy
GSM (grams per square meter) measures fill density โ essentially, how thick and plush the mattress pad is. 100 GSM pads are thin and primarily protective, adding minimal cushioning. 550 GSM pads are noticeably plush and add real comfort. 1000 GSM pads are thick mattress toppers that significantly change how a mattress feels. NOVASTILE carries all three weights โ the right choice depends on how much your current mattress needs supplementing.
Deep Pocket Fit: Why It Matters
Modern mattresses โ especially memory foam and hybrid models โ often run 12โ18 inches deep. Standard mattress pad skirts only stretch to 12โ14 inches, which means they pop off corners repeatedly. Deep pocket mattress pads with elastic skirts that stretch to 18+ inches stay in place on thicker mattresses. If you have a newer mattress, deep pocket is the safe choice.
Cooling vs. Warmth: Material Matters
Polyester fill retains heat โ great for cold sleepers or cold climates. Bamboo viscose fill (used in NOVASTILE's 550 and 1000 GSM toppers) is naturally cooling โ the bamboo fabric wicks moisture and allows better airflow, making it the better choice for hot sleepers or warmer months.
How to Wash and Maintain a Mattress Pad
Machine wash on gentle cycle, cold water, no bleach. Tumble dry on low or no heat โ high heat causes polyester fill to clump and bamboo viscose to degrade faster. After drying, shake vigorously to restore loft. Allow 24โ48 hours for the fill to fully recover before putting sheets on.
